Barracuda Networks

Email security, firewalls & SASE

  • Security & Endpoint Protection
  • Subscription

For · IT and security managers at medium-sized organisations and SME+ with hybrid infrastructure

Barracuda Networks is a broad security provider offering products for email security (Email Protection), network security (CloudGen Firewall, SecureEdge SASE), application security (WAF-as-a-Service) and data protection (Backup). Barracuda is particularly strong in the mid-market and is sold through a partner model. Since its acquisition by KKR in 2022, its product range has been accelerated towards consolidated subscription suites.

The licensing model largely works on a per-user basis (email, SASE) or per appliance (firewall, WAF). Barracuda has steadily increased prices over recent years and actively focuses on multi-year contracts. Customers who fail to renegotiate in time typically face structural price increases of 10-20% upon renewal.

Procurement considerations

  • Unbundle Email Protection before signing

Barracuda tends to push Email Protection Premium Plus with archiving and backup included. In practice, only a portion of clients actually use those modules. Check beforehand if you need Email Archiving and Cloud-to-Cloud Backup before accepting the bundle.

  • Review firewall sizing prior to renewal

Barracuda operates with CPU-core based firewall licences. When migrating to virtual or cloud firewalls, scaling is often set too generously. A sizing review by an independent party can prevent over-purchasing by 20-40%.

  • Choose wisely between 1- and 3-year contracts

Barracuda offers standard 1- and 3-year contracts. With 3-year contracts, discounts are negotiable but you lose flexibility. For organisations with highly variable staff numbers, a 1-year contract with price lock is often strategically better.

  • Use the partner channel for deal registration

Barracuda sells almost exclusively through partners. Deal registrations and partner escalations provide extra discounts that end customers cannot obtain directly. A good procurement partner will leverage this on your behalf.

Compliance risks

  • Email content in threat analysis

Barracuda Email Protection scans and stores email metadata and sometimes full messages for threat analysis. For organisations handling special categories of personal data (healthcare, legal, HR) this requires a thoroughly crafted Data Processing Agreement and explicit EU data residency.

  • End-of-support on older appliances

Barracuda appliances must have an active subscription contract for security updates. Organisations that cease renewing — or forget to renew — continue to physically use the hardware but without definition updates. This poses an immediate security risk that will be flagged during an audit.

  • Migration after ESG incident

In 2023, Barracuda’s Email Security Gateway (ESG) was impacted by a critical zero-day. Organisations still running physical ESG appliances are strongly encouraged to migrate to Email Protection (cloud). Ignoring this migration creates compliance risks and insurance exclusions.

Frequently asked questions about Barracuda Networks

Frequently asked questions about Barracuda Networks licences and procurement.

What is the difference between Barracuda Email Protection Essentials, Advanced and Premium?

Essentials covers anti-spam, malware and phishing. Advanced adds impersonation protection, account takeover detection and incident response. Premium additionally bundles Email Archiving and Backup. For organisations with an increased CEO fraud risk, Advanced is the minimum standard.

Does Barracuda add value alongside Microsoft Defender for Office 365?

Functionally there is some overlap. Microsoft Defender has improved considerably and is sufficient for many organisations. However, Barracuda offers stronger impersonation and social engineering detection and an independent "second layer" outside Microsoft. Many enterprise customers run both deliberately side by side.

Can SoftVaro take over our Barracuda renewal?

Yes. SoftVaro analyses your current Barracuda stack, checks if you are still paying for licences on appliances you no longer use, and negotiates the renewal. We also provide independent advice when considering consolidation to a single supplier (e.g. Proofpoint or Mimecast).
